Isla Holbox is a great island. How we would love to go back to relax for a few more weeks!
We really enjoyed this island and so we would like to give you some tips. Are you considering going to Isla Holbox, but not sure what to do? We help you!
#1 WATCHING THE SUNSET AT PLAYA PUNTA COCOS
You can enjoy the countless hammocks that are next to each other here for hours. But it is also a beautiful place to photograph the iconic jetty during sunset. In our video, which you can find at the end of this article, you can also see a timelapse of the sunset.
Punta Cocos is truly a magical place. But be careful not to stay too long after sunset, because this place should have been called ‘punta musquito’. When I wanted to take some extra pictures when blue hour came on, I was literally attacked by the mosquitoes.
Going back on time (by bike) is therefore the message or use extra strong mosquito spray!
#2 HIKING ON PUNTA MOSQUITO
Wow. How beautiful this place is. If you like white beaches and clear water, then you have found your dream spot here. During low tide, a giant sandpit forms to Punta Mosquito. A lovely, quiet walk that ends at a stretch of beach where you can relax. You will automatically see the end, because after that it is closed because the nature reserve is protected.
Just to be on the safe side, bring a waterproof bag for all your gear. If you are not back in time and the tide has come in, you may have to swim back 🙂
Don’t forget sunscreen either!
#3 BIRD WATCHING DURING SUNRISE
Getting up early to take a walk on the beach pays off. At sunrise there are many (large) birds that eat a delicious fish on the beach.
Island life starts late, which means you have the beach almost entirely to yourself.
#4 SWIMMING WITH WHALE SHARKS
Unfortunately we came to Isla Holbox outside the whale shark season, but I have heard very good experiences about swimming with whale sharks.
These gentle giants can grow up to 13 meters in length! From June to September you can find them off the coast of Isla Holbox. If you travel during this period, it is certainly a nice trip!
#5 SPOTTING STREET ART
On Isla Holbox you will find an endless amount of street art. It makes the streets so nice and colorful. And if you think you’ve seen it all, you’ll come across new ones in the small streets.
If there is a local in the area, be sure to ask about the story behind the drawings, you will be happy to hear the story behind the drawings
#6 BIOLUMINESCENCE PLANKTON
Bioluminescence plankton is a glowing/luminescent plankton in the sea. This is truly a beautiful natural phenomenon and Isla Holbox is one of the best places to see it. It must be really dark, so it is best to go around in the week of the new moon, so that the moon does not give too much light.
To maximize your chances, you can book a tour where you will swim with a small group in the best spots, you will also receive a wetsuit.
#7 LYING IN A HAMMOCK FOR HOURS
Mexico and hammocks, you can’t separate them. And during our trip I really fell in love with hammocks. In Isla Holbox you will find hammocks everywhere. It rarely happens that you can’t find an empty hammock.
A must-do, chilling very hard for a few hours in a hammock that is half in the water – or higher during high tide.
There are worse things to do, right?
#8 RENT A BIKE
Leave those smelly golf carts behind and rent a bike. Because no other vehicles are allowed on the island, it is really wonderful to cycle.
The island is not very big, which makes it easy to cycle from A to B. In addition, the breeze provides some cooling on the hot days – and you help preserve nature on the island
